Why has my UK pension transfer been delayed?
The answer may be missing evidence, receiving-scheme checks, advice requirements or a safeguarding concern. Ask your existing provider to identify the next action it needs from you. An unexplained wait and a formal request for safeguarding guidance require different responses.
The Pensions Regulator’s transfer guidance describes checks for statutory transfers, including overseas-residency evidence and red/amber flags. The rules distinguish situations where a statutory transfer must be refused from those requiring MoneyHelper guidance. Do not interpret a receiving provider’s willingness to accept funds as completion of the ceding provider’s checks.
First establish which stage you are at
Create a short status note using the provider’s actual words. It should identify the pension, the proposed receiving scheme, the request date, the latest letter and the unanswered question. That is more useful than describing the whole case as “stuck.”
| Provider message | Useful next action |
|---|---|
| Information or documents are missing | Ask for one consolidated list and the acceptable format for each item. |
| Receiving-scheme information is under review | Identify the exact administrator contact and outstanding scheme questions. |
| MoneyHelper safeguarding guidance is required | Follow the provider’s referral and booking instructions. |
| A transfer has been refused | Request the written decision and the provider’s complaint procedure. |
What do red and amber flags mean?
They are statutory safeguarding concepts, not informal customer-service ratings. The regulator identifies issues such as missing required information, pressure, unsolicited contact, incentives and unsuitable regulatory involvement among the matters providers examine. The classification depends on the evidence; a member or intermediary should not decide it from a short checklist alone.
For an NRI, separate the evidence used for transfer safeguards from evidence used for tax. An administrator’s overseas-residency request and a tax adviser’s residence analysis have different purposes. Ask what the requested document is intended to establish so that you supply the right information.
Do I need a MoneyHelper appointment?
If the provider directs you to Pension Safeguarding Guidance, use the booking route it supplies. MoneyHelper describes this as free, impartial guidance and says members receive evidence of attendance to give back to the provider. A different general appointment should not be assumed to satisfy the referral.
Prepare your pension statements, the receiving-scheme details and the questions you have about the proposed move. Keep the attendance evidence with your case file. Receiving guidance does not mean MoneyHelper has approved the transfer, confirmed suitability or removed tax questions.
Keep a decision trail, not just an inbox
A simple record can reduce repeated questions. Use four headings: date, sender, request and response. Link each response to the document that answers it. When a revised form is submitted, mark the earlier version as superseded so both providers work from the same information.
- Use the same exact scheme name and policy reference throughout.
- Record which documents were received, not merely which were sent.
- Ask whether an electronic copy, certified copy or original is required.
- Flag expiry dates on quotations and requests without treating them as a reason to skip review.
- Use the provider’s secure upload method for sensitive documents.
These are organisational suggestions, not ways to override a statutory check. A well-labelled file can make communication clearer; it cannot guarantee the provider’s decision or completion date.
Avoid promises to bypass the checks
Treat “we can remove the flag,” “this route is automatically approved” and “pay now to release your pension” as reasons to pause and verify the claim independently. Ask who will perform any regulated activity, what authorisation covers it, and which firm is responsible for the advice.
If you disagree with a decision, use the provider’s written complaint route. MoneyHelper links to further help with pension complaints. Keep factual objections separate from assumptions about the outcome you wanted.
How an educational review can help
MII Solutionz can help you organise the provider correspondence and identify the factual questions still open. Bring the latest decision letter or evidence request to the conversation. The provider remains responsible for its checks, and appropriately authorised advice may be required. We cannot promise approval, a flag’s removal or a faster statutory outcome.
Questions people ask
Is a delayed transfer proof of a scam?
No. A delay is not a diagnosis. Establish the provider’s stated reason and act on that evidence.
Can I book any pension appointment instead?
Do not assume so. Follow the safeguarding referral instructions from your provider and retain the required attendance evidence.
Should I switch receiving schemes just to finish sooner?
Changing the proposal can create new questions and a different comparison. Review the reasons for a change rather than treating it as a shortcut.
Start with the questions in your case.
